Initiatives funded in 2017

01.

Good Fashion Fund

Fashion for Good and The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) have identified a critical finance gap that is slowing circular solutions from being scaled and used in supply chains. So together, they founded the Good Fashion Fund to which we committed an anchor investment of €10 million. Once launched, the fund will provide manufacturers and innovators with the long-term credit needed to scale technologies that contribute to the Five Goods – Good Lives, Good Water, Good Economy, Good Materials and Good Energy. This means the use of recyclable and safe materials, clean and significantly less energy, waterless and closed-loop manufacturing processes and the creation of fair jobs and growth.

02.

Materialwise

A major obstacle to scaling the use of safer chemistry is the cost of assessing whether a chemical is actually safe. This is an expensive process because it needs a lot of technical expertise and review of toxicological literature. And reviews need to be updated as more toxicological data becomes available. Materialwise is working to address this issue through a data-leasing model, which will significantly reduce costs and therefore increase demand for chemical assessments.

03.

DRIFT

DRIFT (Dutch Research Institute for Transitions) is leading a research project together with C&A Foundation and Fashion for Good to identify the levers that have the potential to transform the system. It aims to increase alignment on where industry actors are contributing and can contribute further to systemic change. This is helping C&A Foundation and Fashion for Good refine their strategies for circular fashion, and a public version will be released in 2018.

CanopyStyle

We are supporting one of the most effective advocacy campaigns to protect ancient, endangered forests from destruction due to viscose demand. It takes a collaborative approach, engaging brands and viscose producers in education and action. Our funding will help strengthen CanopyStyle in negotiation, facilitation and advocacy.

Achieved so far

161 brands representing $170 billion in annual revenues have signed up to CanopyStyle. They have committed to stop sourcing viscose from ancient and endangered forests.

11 viscose producers representing 75% of global production have committed to eliminate sourcing from endangered forests.

 Our goals for the future

125-140

brands

implementing endangered forest commitments, actively engaging suppliers, advancing conservation, prioritising circular economy solutions by 2023.

100%

of new mills

built or retrofitted after 2020 rely on non-ancient, non-endangered forests and/or circular materials.

80%

of global viscose

production verified as low risk of being sourced from endangered forests by 2020.

1.5-5m

hectares of forests

are conserved or under moratorium by 2022.
